Force Quitting iTunes when it hangs usually results in the following error message when you try to relaunch it:
The iTunes Library file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file.
No worries though, three easy steps should get iTunes back up and running:
- Go into your iTunes media folder.
- Move the files iTunes Library and iTunes Library.xml to the Desktop.
- Launch iTunes and quit it.
- Move the two files from step 2 back into the iTunes media folder replacing the two files iTunes recreated in step 3.
- Done!
Alternatively you can repair permissions using Disk Utility. That usually takes some time though.
